What are Depilatories? All About Hair Removal Cream

Im not going to waste your time here with a definition, a depilatory is the chemical name for hair removal cream, such as Revitol hair removal cream or the ever popular Nair. It is a concoction used to remove hair from the skin.  What happens is the cream breaks down the part of the hair (kerati) and weakens it to the point that it can be wiped off where it pops out of the skin.  That is why it leaves a nasty smell and smells horrible coming out of the bottle.  There are a number of hair removal solutions out there currently on the market that are able to do this.  Currently they are in very high demand due to the fact that most women want to get rid of them for vanity purposes.  Then there is epilation, which is the process of removing hair from your skin, but only up to the root.  This process can last from just a few days all the way up to a few weeks depending on your body. Beleive it or not, these are all types of hair removal:
  • Good old fashioned shaving
  • Waxing
  • Tweezing
  • Waxing with sugar
  • Hair Threading
  • Devices (excluding the No No and Sens Epil)
  • The use of drugs
Really, it is all just a matter of preference.  The top reasons people use for removing hair are:
  • They are used to a particular method (such as shaving) and does not mind doing it on a regular basis
  • They have been using a method forever, but are open to a new idea
  • They are tired of shaving/waxing (doing these weekly) and will do anything to get permanent hair removal
Whatever your wish is, there is a solution for it.  Depilatories are very popular in the United States.  One of the only major complaints regarding depilatories are being able to see the hair under your skin after the process is finished.  This is mainly common in those people who have darker hair under the skin and if you look up close you can actually see darkish colored spots under the skin.

Some of the advantages of depilatories are:
  • Ease of use simply apply to your skin and rinse off
  • It exfoliates while removing hair
  • Inexpensive and does not require mail order (Available at CVS or Walgreens)
  • Zero pain, some say no pain no gain but not true in this case.
  • Hair is removed from the root, so results last much longer than shaving or even waxing
The other complaint is the smell.  Even the smell of Nair scented lotions can smell terrible as soon as you open the bottle.  This is really a question you have to ask yourself: am I willing to continue to smell this awful scent for the rest of my life, or am I going to use a product like the No No, to remove hair from my body on a permanent basis?  Whatever the reason it is truly up to you.

We like depilatories because it truly is the least painful out of all of them.  We do suggest that you apply the depilatory while out of the shower/bath and do not bathe in order to remove the cream from your body.  This is due to the fact that if you do bathe while having the cream on, you will then be bathing in the same water as all of your dead hair, which is quite nasty!  Shower off after you are finished and rinse it down the drain.
