The Art of a Good Shave

History of Shaving

Shaving is one of the oldest forms of hair removal.  From the beginning of time, men and women have been shaving hair from their bodies.  In the beginning, people shaved so that it would not hinder themselves in battle i.e. predators could not grab their hair, etc.  Centuries later, the ego was invented and vanity started coming into play.  Women wanted to look beautiful for their men, and men wanted a prestigious beard or mustache.  Up until this past century, everyone had to use what is known as the straight razor or a straight edge razor to shave themselves.  This consisted of some sort of handle, with a sharpened blade made out of some sort of metal such as aluminum or iron.

Enter, the razor.  When the razor was invented, this does not mean that the straight edge was out.  Even in todays modern barber shops, barbers use disposable straight edge razor for two reasons: to get a close shave and to get a clean shave.  What do we mean by a clean shave? Well, this basically means that you get close to the source of the hair (the root) and it leaves very little stubble behind.  The reason why most people want a close shave is not only because it feels smooth, but the closer you get the longer you can wait without having to shave again.

Today, disposable razors rule the world.  Razors such as the Gilette Mach 3 and the Quattro razors can have 2, 3, 4 and even up to 5 tiny blades all in one razor.  These razors also normally come with an aloe strip that lubricates the skin as the razor is gliding against it.  This will help reduce the amount of irritation in the skin and keep the skin free from razor burn as well as other irritation and rashes.

Many people do not want to use tools like the No No Hair Removal device and the Tria.  They do not want to have permanent hair removal, and have the philosophy that eventually they might want to grow hair back in a particular area.  Other people feel that they do not trust these devices.  They feel that these devices or gadgets will emit some sort of ray that could damage your body or that it might leave a burn on your skin or even worse damage your skin or pores permanently.

Im not going to waste your time here with a definition, a depilatory is the chemical name for hair removal cream, such as Revitol hair removal cream or the ever popular Nair. It is a concoction used to remove hair from the skin.  What happens is the cream breaks down the part of the hair (kerati) and weakens it to the point that it can be wiped off where it pops out of the skin.  That is why it leaves a nasty smell and smells horrible coming out of the bottle.  There are a number of hair removal solutions out there currently on the market that are able to do this.  Currently they are in very high demand due to the fact that most women want to get rid of them for vanity purposes.  Then there is epilation, which is the process of removing hair from your skin, but only up to the root.  This process can last from just a few days all the way up to a few weeks depending on your body. Beleive it or not, these are all types of hair removal:
  • Good old fashioned shaving
  • Waxing
  • Tweezing
  • Waxing with sugar
  • Hair Threading

We like depilatories because it truly is the least painful out of all of them.  We do suggest that you apply the depilatory while out of the shower/bath and do not bathe in order to remove the cream from your body.  This is due to the fact that if you do bathe while having the cream on, you will then be bathing in the same water as all of your dead hair, which is quite nasty!  Shower off after you are finished and rinse it down the drain.

Hair removal, also known as epilation or depilation, is the removal of body hair, and describes the methods used to achieve that result.

Hair typically grows all over the human body during and after puberty. Men tend to have more body hair than women. Both men and women have hair on the head, eyebrows, eyelashes, armpits, pubic region and legs; and men also have hair on their face, abdomen, back and chest. Hair does not generally grow on the palms of the hands, the lips, certain areas of the genital structure, or the soles of the feet.

Forms of hair removal are practiced for a number of reasons, including cultural, sexual, medical and religious. Forms of hair removal have been practiced in almost all human cultures. The methods used to remove hair have varied in different times and regions, but shaving is the most common method.

Different methods used to remove hair from the body:
  1. Shaving or trimming (manually or with electric shavers)
  2. Depilatories (creams or shaving powders which chemically dissolve hair)
  3. Friction (rough surfaces used to buff away hair)
  4. Tweezing (hairs are tweezed, or pulled out, with tweezers or with fingers)
  5. Waxing (a hot or cold layer is applied and then removed with porous strips)
  6. Sugaring (similar to waxing, but with a sticky paste)
  7. Threading (also called fatlah or khite in Arabic, or band in Persian) in which a twisted thread catches hairs as it is rolled across the skin
